For all things Call of Duty

If you enjoyed the epic HBO mini series “Band of Brothers” you can get energized for the next with HBO’s “The Pacific” premiering on March 14.  The ten part mini series was created by the all star producer team that brought you Brothers – Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman.  Based on the early buzz and the previews (see below), including a Superbowl ad placement, it looks like HBO has pulled out all the stops. Some reports put the price tag at $200 M – which is the largest budget ever for a non theatrical TV only release.

The miniseries follows three U.S. Marines – Robert Leckie (played by James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda) – across the vastness of the Pacific. The haunting experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the confusing jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the coral fortress of Peleliu, up the black sands of Iwo Jima, through the brutal killing of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet challenging, return home after V-J Day.

The script is based on two classic books of the American Pacific War “With the Old Breed,” by Eugene Sledge and “Helmet for My Pillow,” by Robert Leckie, as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers. Continuing the World War II oral history work begun by his father Stephen E. Ambrose (author of the book “Band of Brothers”), Hugh Ambrose serves as a consultant on the miniseries.

Filming was conducted in 2008 in and around Melbourne, where U.S. troops camped in 1943, and multiple locations in Far North Queensland.  To give you a taste of what is in store – here are some of the trailers released by HBO.
