View Full Version : Admin rights to operate COD

Hi,

Just installed COD and found that it won't work except for admin users. This wasn't on the box, although I did later find it in the release notes on the CD.

Environment:
Windows XP SP2
Windows Firewall is disabled.
No Cracks used.
Works fine under administrative user.

Two Questions:

1) Is there any way to install COD to allow non-admin users to access it?

2) If not, has this restriction has been removed for COD2? (We just bought COD, so I can take it back and swap with COD2 if it will work).

Thanks!

Three Replies
1)Use Search button
2)you would get something like this http://www.codboards.com/index.php?showtopic=9482&hl=
3)Welcome to the boards

Okay, unless I"m really missing something, the last post while cute, wasn't helpful.

I performed a search prior to my posting and didn't find the answer I was looking for - hence my posting. The link you provided did not answer the question either.

I would really appreciate a constructive response to my questions:

1) According to my reading of the release notes, COD requires admin access to run. I find it hard to believe that there has not been an upgrade or a workaround to this. If there is one, I'd appreciate your assistance with it.

2) Does COD2 require admin access to run?

Thank you!

Welcome to codboards luv2learnit. Scanger didn't mean to be disrespectful, but we do get asked the same questions over and over again by people that don't use the search function. To a degree, he is right though, you should have found something to point you in the right direction. Anyways, yes, you can run the game as a non administrator, but the administrator has to grant permission. During the install process, I'm sure there is a box you tick to make it available to all users of that computer. You could also check administative tools in the control panel. You should be able to grant permission in there.

BB1,

Thanks for the post, but no, he was not right. The search function (which he assumed I had not performed), did not turn up anything useful. Also, no, there is no check box or any other option to make installation available for non-administrative users.

Nevertheless, I do appreciate the responses - it's all about everyone having fun style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

For those who run into this issue in the future, I finally was able to get a hold of the official COD support. Here is their response:

"Thanks for contacting customer support. There is no official work around for
this; we don't support running the game on non-admin accounts. CoD2 works in
the same manner."

If anyone learns of an unofficial, but effective method of running this on a non-administrative account, I'd love to hear it.

Cheers,

With me PC anyway the Admin must install it.
You dont have to be Admin to play Single player but in Multiplayer u can only play on non PB[Punkbuster] servers

HOPE THIS HELPS

Well scanger I think has the answer. Did the administrator install the game, if not, I suggest you uninstall and then reinstall as the administrator. There are a number of players here that have non admin accounts but are able to play single player, but, if it's multi player that you are having a problem with, I'm stumped. I have tried to help a number of people with that - unsuccessfully. Perhaps I should create a non admin account on my computer and see if I can work it out.

I've seen references to PB, but don't really know what it is.

The environment is:

A single Windows XP computer. COD has been installed using the administrator account. The administrator can play it no problem.

Non-administrative users cannot play it. Not playing via Web - just stand-alone on this PC. The non-admin user can't even launch it, so the single-player vs multi-player discussion is not yet relevant.

If you can describe how you got it to work on a non-administrative account on a stand-alone install on Windows XP, we'd really appreciate hearing it.

Thanks,

Well i see no reason why Single player should not work!
Unless the Administrator isnt Sharing the Files
Thats the only reason
