my friend has a problem with his computer, but didn't want to sign up here to post his problem so i'm doing it for him. the computer is just inexplicably slow. like REALLY slow and not the internet. windows xp and loading up a account takes a while. i thought it might be that he has so much download stuff. a lot of program trials, games, stuff like that might be making his computer slow. the system specs as good as i can remember:
proccesor amd athlon xp 3200 at 2.2 ghz
ram 512 mb ddr sdram
160 gb hard disk
another thing is his computer tends to be on all day and when he's not on, it's just in standby, so that's just another thing. any help with this would be much appreciated
just and edit cause i got the system specs wrong

He probably needs to defrag his hard drive. Leaving the computer on and in standby should not cause any problems.
Defrag can be found via start\programs\accessories\tools
Also make sure he runs a good spyware programme too!

Yeah, spyware can slow you computer down a lot. Also, have a fairly good anitvirus program, just in case.

Tell ur friend to do a system spyware+virus scan, then defrag, after that clean the registry through regcleaner (try googling it as well follow this link-->) A Link TO 1 of Many RegCleaners (http://www.registry-cleaner.net/). If after all that it still goes slow, then check for overheating problems, if he uses Object desktop or something like that then disable it, then check for little things that eat up his ram. If none of that works, tell ur friend to do a system backup and then format :P.
That's all i can think of for now. :D

actually, he's kraut's friend but anyway, thanks for the help guys. kinda ironic that while i was reading this with my friend and we got to the virus scan part, a popup on his computer told him his norton antivirus subscription expired :D anyway, he's gonna try to do defrag his harddisk, and actually buy antivirus instead of getting the free trial
