Hey,
I need help setting up my mic so I can use it for Ventrilo. I've tried having batman help me but we're out of ideas, so he refered me here. Uh....I have windows 98 and just bought a new sound card, a Sound Blaster Live 5.1. I've tried installing and reinstalling the drivers...and alot of other things. I think the problem lies more with my sound card and or mic rather tham Ventrilo. The problem may be I just need to set up my mic. Yet I dont know where the program to do that is. I dont know what else there is I can do. If you have any ideas could you please help?

You can verify your mic's functionality by going to sound recorder in windows.
Start - Programs - Accessories - Multimedia - Sound recorder.
Then just click on record and start saying things in the mic, if you see the graph moving, your sound card and your mic is fine, if not let me know we'll try a few things.

Ok do you have the regular windows sound icon in the system tray or is it soundblaster's own thingy.

System tray is where your system time is. Is there a yellow speaker there?
If there is a yellow speaker, double click on it, go to Option menu and properties, check mark on mic (if available), then click on Recording radio button and check the mic option, if not checked. Then click on Ok. Now speak in mic and see if the level changes. If it doesn't something is wrong with the mic.

Try squeezing the wires while talking and see if it makes any difference if the wire is lose or not. If not then try a different mic.

Are you able to get sound output from the card? Like normal sound, mp3 or whatever?

Echo is not a good sign, you should either get sound or no sound. Regardless, try a different mic, if that doesn't work something might be wrong with the card itself.

no, i was messing around with the settings for the card in order to get my mic to work. I'm pretty sure i changed sothing to make it echo. I'll just try and mess around with it more.

Not sure what's going on. If there is an option of "Mic boost" or something related, choose that option and see if it helps.
I do remember there was something like that in SB Live 5.1

The most awful thing happend, it quit working. :( I had it so i could record using the sound recorder, but when I tried to use it with Ventrilo it quit working again. Could it in anyway have anything to do with how much space my hard drive has? Say if it only has about 200 MB left? I'm working on getting an 80 Ghz because all I have now is a 9Ghz

Likely when you used Ventrilo, ventrilo itself disabled the mic boost that you manually enabled. Check to see if it's still there or not. If not, then you'll need to contact Ventrillo to see how it can bypass that.

nope, the boost is still selected. It says Micophone +20 dB Boost. I'm assuming that means the boost is on.

Try turning it off and then on, then check if you get sound in windows via mic.
