Hi I just replaced my geforce4 mx 420 with a redeon 9200 SE ( a cost affective video card) I have a question, if i highten the 3D performance quality what difference would tis make on COD? Is it better to keep it low for a smoother gaming experience?

My second question is that I'm courrently running and AMD ATHLON XP 2000+ with an MSI motherbaord with 4x AGP. Would I see a dramatic imporvement in gameplay if I upgraded my chip and board to a board with 8x AGP? Would doubling the AGP speed really make a huge difference...

I could use some opinions on this, seeing it will dictate whether I will upgrade to a AMD ATHLON XP 2600 with a 233fsb or a better chip witha higher FSB. It would be worth changing my motherboard for one that could handle a higher FSB and better AGP.

with *todays* cards a 8x AGP slightly increases performance and I would say don't worry about it(not a big enough increase to really affect much)...however in the future it might be a different story.

Roger that.

Setting your OpenGL settings (or Direct3D) to max, will give some improvement, if your system can handle it. According to your current mobo i assume you have at least 256mb of memory, so you could try it out. You can always change it back if it doesn't work out.

Upgrading to 8x AGP won't give a noticable performance boost.

I have 512 pc 2100 so I should'nt ahve a problem.
Thanks for the help

Though I have another question...
What kind of CPU could make a substantial difference in gaming compared to my AMD Athlon XP 2000+ B)

Athlon is the best gaming CPU imho.

^^^ That's the DVI connector, for displays that have digital inputs like a digital flat panel, etc.

Here's the manual for that card: http://www.ati.com/support/manualpdf/Rade9200.pdf (http://www.codboards.com/redirect.php?http://www.ati.com/support/manualpdf/Rade9200.pdf)

AMEN PREACH IT BROTHER. :D

And personally I think nVidia is a great card, even for CoD. I can find just as many problems with ATI cards and CoD as I can for nVidia cards. And I'm an active contributor on several other CoD forums, so I see a lot of posts.

I have actually found that while ATI cards outperform Nvidia cards on some games...Nvidia is compatible with many more games. ;)

Hey dude, Ihave a radeon 9200 SE too. I noticed something cool with COD. Turn your 3D and openGL settings to anisotropic filtering 2X. Now in the game turn "show blood" to yes. You will see blood coming out of soldiers as you shoot them. It can scatter on the wall and floor too. I would disable "sync every frame" since it's not really worth the performance drop; the 9200 SE isn't really powerful enough to need that feature, you shouldn't see frames tearing. If you do, turn it on.

What does "sync every frame" do exactly?

Here's what I found on the topic.

OK now the most important setting, Sync Every Frame. I leave mine on and I will tell you why in a little bit. First an explanation of what this setting does to the game. When you leave the Sync Every Frame setting on it will limit the frame rate of the game to the speed of the monitor refresh rate. Typically 60 hertz by default. This means with this setting turned on your frame rate will lock at 60 frames plus or minus a few frames per sec. I have my monitor refresh rate locked at 100 hertz so I leave the sync setting on. If you turn the Sync option off in the game it will let the game generate as many frames as it can with the speed wide open. It will not wait to see if the Monitor is ready to display a new frame. That sounds good for speed but for picture quality it does hurt a little. When the frame rate of the game exceeds the monitor refresh rate you may see some tearing of the picture or some strange video effects. Most of the time this isn't a big deal but it really bugs me :)

Changing the refresh rate of your Monitor to a higher setting is an alternative that will make the game look much smoother. This is a Windows setting so it is a little beyond the scope of this discussion on Game Settings. I will give you a little advice on the refresh settings though. DO NOT exceed the refresh rate of your Monitor for any given video resolution. You may damage the monitor. If you want to run a higher refresh rate be absolutely certain that it is within the limitations of the monitor to do so.

That came from http://www.morbidangel.com/sailorscouts/begin01.htm (http://www.codboards.com/redirect.php?http://www.morbidangel.com/sailorscouts/begin01.htm) which actually talks about Quake 3 but the concept is the same. In some other games I think it's called "vertical sync" (e.g. Tribes 2).

Thanks!

I was just wondering what you set your graphics and performance to while playing COD? How much Ram and whta kinda of cpu do you have?

I have a Geforce 3 64 MB card with 1.3 GHz AMD PC and 512 MB ram. The only graphics change I've made is set the game for 1024x768 and turn the brightness up a bit. That's it.

A note about ram.... I played CoD for a couple weeks with only 256 ram and it took twice as long to load maps in multiplayer. Just an fyi.
