Howdy all I was going to make this a poll but there are just too many diferent weapons to have a simple poll about.

Here is my main idea pick a handgun or 2 or 3 that ya love the most.

For me I have a different Fav for different situations.

I like my 44 Ruger Redhawk Magnum for hunting. (allthough it is sheer joy to plink with too)

I like my 45 Ruger P97 DC for CC(concealed carry) and again how much fun it is to shoot

But I like my .357 magnums too and they are probably the most versatile handgun around.

What I mean by that is you can handload any .38 caliber round which gives you the most choices of reloads of any other handgun.

Also you can buy a box of 38's for cheap and 38 specials too right off of the store shelf great inexpensive plinking material.

Couldn't you elaborate a bit more? I mean; great but not the best. Best for what?

Jman here's some things to think about

There are many considerations to think about before a person should purchase a handgun or any weapon really ie... How big of a person are you? Are you using this weapon for self defense, Plinking and target shooting, hunting?

What caliber are you going to want. Cost of ammunition and availability of ammunition. Where do you live can you go out your front door and start shootiing (legally lol) or are you in a city area etc...

Rugers are crap out of the boxas are S&W...

The ultimate handgun for anyone would be the 40 Cal H&K with stainless slide or blued slide. This gun is just remarkable out of the box and has a lovely recoil system.

I know this is handguns but had to through in my fav shotgun...

I know practically nothing about handguns, but I've been told that the Glock 17 is a decent choice. Is that true?

Never heard about that one(never used it in a game)

I think it was the handgun in the original version of Half-Life.

Last time I looked to buy a new handgun, which was about a year ago....lots were complaining baout how the Glocks were jamming, even the cops that had them were trading them in to get Berettas.

I have been thinking of purchasing a handgun, but I truly know NOTHING. If I were to use it for self defense, as well as maybe some target shooting in my backyard (I have a very large back yard), which guns should I purchase? I'm a pretty big guy, 230 lbs or so.

Is there any one gun that will let me do that? Or would I need to purchase two, one for CC and one for target and plinking?

You can actually use one for both. The only reason I would say otherwise would be that you really dont want to be using your CC so excessivly. Would hate to see it jam from overuse at a critical time ya know?

My advise would be either buy 2 or as I did...3 handguns. I know you may be saying "This guy is nuts!!!" But really its the best way and this is why.....

You buy 1 for CC, use this and shoot no more then 4 - 6 boxs of ammo per month...the max would be 8 per month but you really dont want to over use it because parts wear fast and as above mentioned you dont want something going wrong with it when you REALLY need it.

My suggestion for a good, accurate, fairly reasonably priced CC would be the 40 Cal H&K USP in either the blued or stainless....stainless is probably the better choice because its easier to maintain and no worries about the blue becoming discolored after so long (leaving the gun lookin ugly as sin)

or

http://www.hk-usa.com/pages/Civilian/Handguns/uspexpert.html (http://www.codboards.com/redirect.php?http://www.hk-usa.com/pages/Civilian/Handguns/uspexpert.html)

I swear by my recommendation of this gun, this thing is so well made and easy to tear down, clean and reassemble. And its accuracy out of the box is not like ANY other firearm I have ever owned or tried. It's very light because of the polymer frame and recoil is minimized with its built in recoil reduction system, making it a very easy to use and higly effective and maybe THEE best CC/firearm on the market.

Next you want a firearm for target practice, now you can either buy 1 or 2 but if you have some good ranges in your area both indoor and outdoor and feel you may want to spend a bit of time shooting then I suggest buying 2...

I suggest something in a slightly smaller caliber then the 40Cal...bullets aint cheap when your letting them fly for a few hours and the tab can build up fast. I would suggest something in the 9mm range. There are quite a few descent 9mm out there to choose from but in my experince a 9mm S&W is a good choice. You may even want to look into a compact version of this (recoil will be slightly higher, but your a big guy right?) If your hands are too big then dont worry about the compact but go to a store and handle a compact S&W and a full frame and see what ya think. I mention the compact only because on days when it is too warm out and you dont feel like carrying the larger framed H&K (if thats what you opt for) then you can always fall back to your trusty compact.

or a little less expensive model

Then for your 3rd you want something in the .22Cal range DIRT CHEAP AMMO !!! So after having fun with your other firearms and you still want to shoot but without digging deeper into your pocket for the more expensive ammo you can whip out your .22 and plink away like a madman for hours of fun without going completly broke. These models are a dime a dozen but I found the Ruger series .22 to be very fun, friendly and accurate and not all that expensive. They have an extensive list in this caliber.

As I said above you can go with just 2 but found having 3 was much more efficant and fun while minimizing wear on your primary and keeping the cost of ammo to a acceptable level. Also with the .22 you may even consider reloading your own ammo and save yourself a few more dollars.

I own half a dozen hadnguns and will probably buy another soon but I have to suggest thay you consider getting a 357 mag.

As I said before you can shoot .38's .38 specials and of course 357 magnums. Even in a small CC weapon shooting 38's from a 357 is easy on the wallett and easy on the fatigue factor.

I also suggest getting enrolled wiith the NRA in your area as you can get set up in some great classes help to preserve our right to bear arms, and also get a chance to get some hands on experiance.

Also depending on which area you live in the NRA has Concealed Carry classes and great ranges. Plus they have many classes set up for familys

I would go into this further but there are so many really great handguns out there and many of them perform extreamly well that we could write a book and there are tons of books already.

I have shot literally hundreds of diff handguns and each one has a little different feel to them and some come out of the box shooting great groups while others of the same exact type take some tweaking to get into shape.

I have shot and owned most of the major brands of handguns and I have found that you can save money and get the same quality with a Ruger.

Mortician had a good point about the .22 calibers cheap and fun to shoot and no fatigue really I can see no reason not to buy a .22 pistol just for the sheer joy of plinking.

I personally feel the 357 though a beautiful firearm is indeed overkill (no pun intended) for a CC. The recoil factor is indeed a bit much, especially if your new to handling a firearm. I really do suggest going to a local range that rents firearms and see if you can get your hands on an H&K though and would place money on how happy you would be in the purchase of one. .40Cal is considered a mainstream as for a well balanced CC load.

My suggestions arent the RIGHT choice because everyone has their own taste in firearms. No differant then buying a car really....some like fast some like slow, some like looks and others dont care as long as it works. The best suggestion is as stated above, find yourself a shop that has a good varity of rentals and get a feel for them, if you dont see something you like dont be afraid to ask what they can do to accomodate you on a selection that you might be interested in thats not in their rental case. If they really want to make a sale and are a good shop they will go the extra mile.

Well I only suggested the 357 as he said he is a big guy 230 pounder and it is cheap to shoot 38's. And it is a great gun if you want to get into reloading which I think is a very practical way to learn more about your weapons.

Part of the 357 suggestion too is the intimidation factor. But I strongly advise not using a 357 in heavily populated or dense areas such as apartment buildings, trailer parks, or offices as the penetration, and carrying power is terrific.

I have to say the 40 is a good caliber too as you mentioned apples and oranges much like cars or house buying, you really need to get all of the info you can so you can make an informed and practical decision.

My uncle can get you just about any handgun you want. My dad might get a Glock 45 from him sometime.

My favorite handgun is a Deagle.
