Apparently there is a problem with Punkbuster running on the Windows 7 RC. My understanding is it will not work - PB is aware of the problem but hasn't committed to fixing it yet.

Recommendation is to not install Win7 for use with PB-enabled games.

Some smart people found a work around ....

From http://arch1tect.wordpress.com/2009/04/29/punkbuster-x64-fix-windows-7/
Currently Punkbuster (the anti-cheat software built into many multiplayer games) has major compatibility issues with Windows 7. Various fixes have been discovered for x32 versions of the Beta OS, but none (until now) for x64. Punkbuster themselves have refused to support Windows 7 until RTM, so forgive the “hackiness” of the fix, but it works.

The Fix

In both C:\Windows\SYSWOW64 and C:\Windows\System32

Open PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe’s properties and enable Vista Compatibility Mode, as well as “Run as administrator”. Save.

Right click on the desktop and create a new text file, then copy paste the following:

Quote:
:start

sc config PnkBstrA type= own type= interact

sc config PnkBstrB type= own type= interact

timeout 60

goto start

Save the text file as punkbuster.bat and run it (as an administrator) before joining a server.

Problem “resolved”.

I have tried to get into the server, but it says that Punkbuster is kicking me for not responding??? I have Punkbuster turned on in my options, so what gives? Help?

So far I'm finding W7 sucks for gaming compared to XP, at least on 32 bit using older spec anyway. Some of it's features are great, like being able to detail what programs use what file extensions by default, built in compatibility modes for installation and use of programs, and I've also noticed it's quick for surfing the net and the color quality even seems a bit more vibrant.

Despite getting on average 100MB more free RAM with W7 after using AlacrityPC vs XP though, most every current gen game I've tried so far has terrible performance, esp Burnout Paradise, Wolverine and Prototype. And despite it's compatibilty option, I find it odd that it wants to spit out the ATI Tool v2.7 driver, yet it will let XP drivers for my M-Audio Revo and MX-500 install and function fine.

I am frequently getting the Startup Repair tool popping up, along with W7 deactivating itself and sometimes even shutting off my PC over this one little GPU app ATI Tool. What's odd is there's no hint of it not working properly either. All it's features work to change fan settings and such, and it's a build version that works fine in Vista.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if I could get any other app to tweak my GPU fan settings, but so far non have worked, including RivaTuner and CCC. In fact I can't even get CCC to launch after installing it, and people are saying it's scaling feature doesn't work in W7 anyway, which is one of the primary things other than fan speed I wanted to use it for.

Is this just with COD5 or all games using PB, because I've had no problems running COD4 on W7 64bit ( knock on wood ).
