Problem The First
So I recently bought this computer (few years ago) as a second user machine. It was £300 and had the following specifications:
~AMD Duron 1.2GHz
~128 MB SDRAM
~64MB Intergrated GrafiX
~LAN, Sound on the motherboard.
~Windows 98
I upgraded it and put in a new motherboard, a GeForce4 440 64MB grafiXxX card, and 128MB more SDRAM.
Before I "up"graded I hadn't noticed any problems with anything I was trying to do. After upgrading, and trying a few games, it decided to f00k up every one in a while. And it still does. Yeah, so that's my problem.
Sometimes it'll go to a blue screen, sometimes it will just fr33z, sometimes it will give me a fatal error. But only when I'm playing a game or whatever, never when I'm "word writing" (typing). I can leave it on all day and it'll just keep saving that screen with no problems. I think it's overheatation but I'm usually wrong. What shall I do?
Problem The Second
It won't switch it's stupid self off. Here is a little thing that always happens...
Me: *Presses SHUT DOWN*
Computer: *Closes all programs, goes to shut down...*
Me: *Waits 4 hours*
Computer: *...Is still on*
Me: *Holds POWER button*
Computer: *Is still on*
Me: WHY WONT YOU WORK £$!%^ AND £$%R_*£ YOU STUPID £%"!£
Computer: O_O
Me: *Unplugs computer*
Computer: Ah. I'm off!
As the dawn of the next day... dawns, humanvirus goes to switch on his computer.
Me: *Plugs in computer, switches on*
Computer: *Runs Skandisk*
This tends to happen every time I want to use the bloody thing (not often). Not an all that important problem, please read the above problem before solving this one. If you can't solve the above problem, whatever, solve this one. Whatever you do, solve something!

Doesn't sound good. Although I'm not good at this stuff, I'll offer all that I know.
I recently had an overheating problem with my computer, it would randomly shut down and freeze up, and eventually wouldn't start until I left it for a while.
The only idea I can come up with is that you are overheating. I would check your fan, heat sink and power supply, and make sure they are satisfactory.

I think they're working ok, I suspect it's overh33tation but I can't be sure. The gits at my local computer shop are 0% help. I'm thinking about getting a new computer but I need some idiot to flog this POS to.

Do you have info about the old motherboard and the new motherboard?
What it sounds like is you just upgraded and never bothered to reinstall windows or run a repair. Because of that, you have older drivers for the older motherboard. You are lucky to be able to run the comp still with a new motherboard without reinstalling windows.
But I suggest you reinstall windows to get rid of this problem. Unplugging the cable like that will likely damage your harddrive sooner or later. I say back up your stuff now and reinstall windows, or stay with your normal procedure and expect a damaged harddrive sooner or later.

I have formatted, I think, 3 times. The old motherboard was by "PC Chips", I don't know the model because I'm not at home now. The new one is a ASRock. I've installed the drivers from the website... So I don't know what's wrong there.
It really wont turn it self off! I press the button... it just stalls at a black screen. Nothing happens! I can't just leave it on 24/7. For a start it's so loud I would never get to sleep!

I think I've got the problem fixed now. When I upgraded, I had 2 different sticks of RAM, I got some advice from someone, took one of the sticks out, and it hasn't crashed since. :)
