Hello,

I launch the game, I press esc 3 times to skip the intros and then I select a new game, choose a mode and when i click on 'start game' it starts loading just a little bit and then the taskbar from windows xp flashes and it won't load the game. Then I simply press esc and it exits to windows.

note: I had installed windows vista before on this same machine and it runs on it.

I now use windows xp sp2 and it doesn't run.

ideas?

Welcome to the boards.

Have you set CoD4 to run in XP compatiblity mode?

what error message pops up?

Also, did you install the DirectX that came with CoD4?

So, what happen if you let the intros run? Does it still crash? I think Woowoo is onto it, with the DirectX.

Hi

Yes I played the whole game from beginning till end on my laptop on this very same machine on Windows VISTA!!

I don't know why it won't work on XP.
I also tried a new fresh reinstall.
I already have the latest drivers directly from intel.
When I click on 'start game' the mission briefing (movie) starts and the progress bar loads a little bit (half an inch) and then I hear the windows error sound and I see Windows XP taskbar flashing a few times while the mission briefing continues. I see the whole intro (briefing) and it freezes in the end where it says

1st force recon...

I press esc then and it exits directly to windows.

Strange thing it doesn't display an error and there is nothing in the event viewer.

The game is playable under Windows Vista!
I'd say not so smooth graphics, but I played the whole game with low details set in the graphic options. not bad under vista!

Btw directx is up to date too, updated it directly from microsoft (web install).

So why can't make it work in XP?

Only thing I could think of is Vista uses directx10 and winxp 9.0c

How to make it work in WinXP?

Your first problem is getting the directx from MS. Use the one that came with CoD4! Also, what graphics card do you have?

Sorry, I was confused because of this:

The microsoft version of DX isn't the latest version (go figure). What throws you off is they both say 9.0c but the one that comes with CoD4 is the right one.

Anyway, what makes this hard to diagnose is that without an error message it could be anything. It could be your sound card / drivers, graphics drivers, or DVD player. So we'll need a listing of your PC specs. I would also make sure you have the latest drivers for each of these.

The other thing that's strange is we usually have a lot of issues with Vista and almost none with XP. You're special I guess. :)

Just an idea; when you hear the Windows Error sound, instead of pressing Esc to exit the game (and possibly closing the error message), try pressing Alt+Tab to switch back to your desktop. (If this doesn't work, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up Task Manager, then press Alt+Tab.) Hopefully you'll still have an error message of some description sitting behind the game...
