Feral

At the moment I have Sygate Personal firewall - but I need to upgrade it to Pro version (and that costs £££) in order to change any preferences on it. So, if I'm going to have to spend money on this (and I think that's probably a good idea given my luck with viruses lately  ) then which Firewall would you people suggest? Which ones would you avoid? What are you using now and how much is a decent firewall going to cost me anyway?

is this Sygate Personal firewall a software firewall? If so, I'd recomend you get a hardware firewall. Depends on how many computers you have and how much of a tight security you need. I personally use Cisco PIX 500 but that puppy costs somewhere around $500 US.
If you want a not so expensive fix for a good hardware firewall, you can consider getting one of those new routers with NAT technology, that also gives you good protection.
Software firewalls is a big no no from me, they are stupid and easy to break into.

I agree with logic about software firewall, they seem to be too protective and disables some of your stuff, like zone alarm (free) it asks you to proceed with a connection to ANYTHING that wants to connect to the net which really is a PITA. Myself I just have a Linksys router for my network and it works very well with the built in firewall, I paid $20USD after rebates and savings. :D
