If we were to make contact with extra-terrestrials....what would you do, and what do you think would happen?.Just curious....First off, the internet would crash, and before that every single active forum would have dozens of topics, or hundreds going OEMGEEF*******GOSH LALWEL. Because it's the most major thing to happen to humanity ever, tv would be packed.....and I would probably stay home discussing this on codboards, or soldatforums when the internet is back up...

I would probally go fishing ... or go play golf , everybody would be panicing , and the course would be empty :) . Realisticly , i would probally be watching the news looking for more news on it.

There is no way the world would be able to cope with it that well.

I mean think about how many millions of people there are who have beliefs which go against life elsewhere in the universe. So many religions would collapse and people wouldn't know what to do with themselves. If you've been following this religion all your life that tells you God created humans, etc, etc, and then suddenly that whole theory goes out the window, how do you comprehend that?

I think there would be thousands of suicides of people who can't cope, or are convinced we're going to be attacked or something.

Everything in the world would just grind to a halt. I can imagine all governments would suddenly be working towards this new goal of developing the initial contact. Suddenly the entire way we saw the world and the universe would just change. No longer would it be about individual countries bickering - we would now be just one planet of beings amongst what could potentially be an infinite number of others in the universe.

Reminds me of the film Independance Day, where all the people are gathering on top of the Empire State Building with banners and signs to greet the aliens ships.

Yeah I would probably piss myself because I'd be so excited....how lucky my generation gets to see this.....and the suicides...

If you really want to know what would happen, take a look at the radio broadcast of H. G. Wells' War of The Worlds by Orson Welles in 1938.

Many people missed or ignored the opening credits of the programme, and in the atmosphere of growing tension and anxiety in the days leading up to the Second World War, took it to be a news broadcast. Contemporary newspapers reported that panic ensued, with people fleeing the area, and others thinking they could smell the poison gas or could see the flashes of the fighting in the distance.

The author Richard J Hand cites studies by unnamed historians who "calculate[d] that some six million heard the CBS broadcast; 1.7 million believed it to be true, and 1.2 million were 'genuinely frightened'". (Hand, 7) While Welles and company were heard by a comparatively small audience (Bergen's audience was an estimated 30 million), the uproar that followed was anything but minute: within a month, there were about 12,500 newspaper articles about the broadcast or its impact (Hand, 7), while Adolf Hitler cited the panic, as Hand writes, as "evidence of the decadence and corrupt condition of democracy." (Hand, 7)

Later studies suggested this "panic" was far less widespread than newspaper accounts suggested. However, it remains clear that many people were caught up — to one degree or another — in the confusion that followed.

Later studies also indicated that many listeners missed the repeated notices that the broadcast was entirely fictional, partly because the Mercury Theatre (an unsponsored "cultural" programme with a relatively small audience) ran opposite the popular Edgar Bergen show. About 12 minutes into Bergen's program an opera number began, and many listeners presumably began tuning around the dial. According to the American Experience program "The Battle over Citizen Kane", Welles knew the schedule of the Edgar Bergen show, and scheduled the first report from Grover's Mill at the 12 minute mark to heighten the audience's confusion. As a result, some listeners happened upon the CBS broadcast at the point the Martians emerge from their spacecraft.

Orson Welles made it seem so real that ppl fliped out, and are still flipped out about it today. It seems some ppl still think it WAS real.

On October 30th, 1938, the United States experienced mass hysteria--most pronounced on the east coast in New York and New Jersey--in response to a radio broadcast put on by Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater On The Air. The public reaction has prompted decades of research into mass hysteria, been used as a model by the military around the world to design information warfare against enemy troops and civilian populace, and used as the most compelling reason to protect the public from the knowledge of the presence of aliens on Earth.

General Wilson has been conducting an alien white paper. It took him a little while, but he managed to pluck a file out of the morass of red tape over at the Pentagon, and this file reveals the truth of the Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast in 1938. The truth is, there actually was an alien invasion in Grover's Mill.

From our analysis of eyewitness reports conducted on the 50th Anniversary of Orson Welles' broadcast of "War of the Worlds", it appears that in 1938 it was just a scouting mission, a group ahead of the main alien invasion to evaluate Earth's technological level and what to expect on arrival. The aliens were defeated, not by bacteria, but by the Grover's Mill Militia with the weapons they had on hand. It appears they did not have their "magnetic blister" shields to protect their ships. The cost was high though. There were 38 men in the militia in 1938. Only 4 remained alive in 1988.

Orson Welles' radio show though was nowhere near what really happened. According to one eyewitness, "He trivialized one of the great moments of our life. No one really remembered what happened; all they remembered was the damn radio show."

That's the fascinating aspect to all this. You know, when you think about it, Welles was a genius. He had people believing there was an invasion, then he turned around and told them that it was all a joke. We think people were afraid to admit that they'd been taken. That's what all this silence is about. Dr. McCullough says that those that can't remember the invasion can't remember it because it was just too frightening for them to deal with.

Welles was so dramitc he even used sound clips form the Hindenburg crash in the program to make it seem more real.

Yes. it was only on the Australian news, you probably didn't hear about it..

Dascoo

O EM GEE

No but seriously, why would they even make a story like that up. A militia beat an alien species capable of travelling vast areas of the galaxy and they can't fight a few people?

Oshiri
09-08-2006, 03:19 PM
Apparently :P

maybe their race never got round to developing weapons? what with all that time they spent developing space travel..

Dascoo
09-08-2006, 04:34 PM
THEN WHY WOULD THEY BE INVADING US!

Not very good planners. Raises questions on why the hell they would even go near probably the most violent species.

You know what I'd do? I'd practise cod2 for fun, then I would panic. Of course, a little cod2 can relax you... hehehe... I joke !

Seriously, I'd just stay home staring at a blank wall, because I rather just sit there then have a heart attack or suffer from ET cardiac arrest (ps I made that up)

Then again, I'd die anyways...
Who knows, we might be just the only ones out there, but there is a life somewhere in the universe, and I'm sure of it (not joking this time guys)

Well they wouldnt be invading....we'd just recieve a signal from them.

Savage
09-09-2006, 02:15 AM
wat?

Oshiri
09-09-2006, 05:18 AM
distances are really far, look at what we have done.. one day we probably (assuming we dont blow each other up) master space travel.

But untill then, all we've done (and are doing) is sending signals into space, and simultaniously looking for them.

Dascoo
09-09-2006, 09:18 AM
Savage the most realistic way contact will happen is that we recieve a signal from them, or one of our signals from 20 years ago reaches a star system 10 light years away, which has intelligent life. The intelligence in that system would then send a signal back, to present. So that means the signal is 10 years old. Signals only travel at lightspeed so yeah.... Or it could be that it happens to be that one of there ships is in the vicinity of earth at the time, then there screwed because we'll act nice then launch a full assault, destroy the ship, recover the salvage, and probably within 50 years we'll launch a full assault on there homeworld.....yay for us.

We would have to worry about religous fundimentalists more then anything. They might think its satan coming rain down fire and brimstone and try to attack them. I dont know, maybe they already know us more then we think, and have chosen not to come into contact with us.

Exactly, they would be/are scared of us. They give us an FTL drive....what do we do? We make it into a bomb.

Mig

Maybe nobody likes us...

If we received a signal, we might not be able to figure out what it means. Ever. You can't presume that another race has the same laws of mathematics or whatever to send a pattern or, you know, something that we would consider 'universal' language.

Dascoo
09-11-2006, 02:58 PM
It neccesarily wouldn't have to be a message. All it would have to be is a pattern. Then we would determine where the signal came from, and then proceed to send as many nuclear weapons because there infidels.

09-12-2006, 09:51 AM
yep.. like i said, thats Humanity for ya.. we're one of the only species on the planet that:

1) kill because we can
2) kill each other

Dascoo
09-12-2006, 07:51 PM
It's funny how we've made all these alien invasion movies because they want to kill us all, but no movies from an alien view.....Now I have an idea.

Oshiri
09-13-2006, 09:48 AM
got a couple of games fromthe aliens view; destroy all humans and Halo2 are just 2 games that show it from the aliens' view :)

Dascoo
09-13-2006, 03:19 PM
What I mean is like an Aliens view would be like if Humans invaded

Mig
09-14-2006, 05:41 AM
Or what about the aliens view that they're coming to investigate Earth (just like we would their planet) and humans attack them, thinking THEY'RE under attack?

Dascoo
09-14-2006, 06:07 AM
What if the aliens were actually human's? WHAT IF IT'S RUSSIA INVADING UNITED STATES

Oshiri
09-14-2006, 03:20 PM
OH NOEZ WE IZ DOOM'T!

on a more serious note; didn't America expect a Russian invasion during the Cold War?

Dascoo
09-14-2006, 07:13 PM
That would be absolutely chaotic so most likely no.

I really like killzone's story cus it show's a human colony invading a human colony.

Alpha_Pasta
09-15-2006, 01:22 AM
Didn't the Russians expect the American's to invade?

Thats the thing about the cold war - M.A.D. Mutually assured destruction. By the time each side had the bomb - they realised if they dared to use it, as well as destroying the other country, they themselves would be destroyed.

Blow up who? Aliens?

(let alone the fact Star Trek is stupid because every alien race is roughly human in proportion and body structure)

Oshiri
09-15-2006, 10:03 AM
mm.. a smaller planet with lower gravity on their home could mean that another race are absolutely huge..

of course much more likely is the existance of simple organisms.

Alpha_Pasta

We wouldn't blow em up...

Probably make friends.

Oshiri
09-15-2006, 11:13 AM

Blow up who? Aliens?

(let alone the fact Star Trek is stupid because every alien race is roughly human in proportion and body structure)

That's why Star trek is a comedy.

Seriously though, we would probably declare war on them, find out that there more powerful then us then make peace.....then suddenly nuke the hell out of them.

Savage

lol then find out they have some kind of uber defence and nukes dont work. then we are screwed

Barney is a badass, hard-riding, hard-rocking sum'bitch.

Man, the world leaders would have a field day nuking some enemy civilisation. I wonder if it'd bring about new arguments, because I bet Bush would be at the front saying "Yeah we're gonna nuke 'em" and other leaders are telling him to stop being a dick and then he goes ahead and does it anyway...

Dascoo

Any intelligent life in the galaxy....how come? We're here, so why can't there be any there? Probably not a high chance, but if we exapnd past this solar system then maybe one day we'll meet them, and make them regret meeting us.
