View Full Version : What's your country best in the world at?
Ok, let's get a war going here. Name something that you think your country is the best in the world at. I'll start:
British humour is unrivalled.
I saw the US version of The Office and it wasn't anywhere near as sharp. They couldn't resist making it just slightly over-the-top and missing the point. Obviously, it's because it needs to be accessible by the US audience - which says it all.

Tizmo, I used to eat this really nice stuff when I was younger, and I'm not sure if it's of German or Danish origin. Literally translated, it is called beer bread, and it's like a dark brown grain which you cook with water to form like a porridge. You eat it with milk.
In Danish it's called øle brød ("beer bread")
Tizmo

I would guess that it is of danish origin.

No not even close to all of them, and Jerry Springer ... pffft
Russia wins the drinking. The amount of vodka they drink as a nation is ridiculous. I read a statistic somewhere like they drink 140 bottles a year, per person. Maybe more, I can't remember.
Czech Republic consumes the most beer per person.

Thats called natural selection. Those ppl will do themselfs in. The patriotic core of America is still there, at least in my heart.
I don't know about real patriotic people. I mean everyone likes their own country, that's fine, but people who are really over-the-top patriotic are just a bit too much for me.
I find them annoying, arrogant, ignorant and normally they're convinced their country is the center of the world. Sorry to say, it's mainly Americans, although every country has them in some way or another. England has some disgusting hooligans when it comes to football and stuff.

Germany Is good For-Bread-Beer And Chocolate:)
Yeah but the people I am talking about are patriotic.
There was this TV series in the UK once, I don't know if they showed it elsewhere, but it was an experiment into different countries' cultures and attitudes to each other.
They got different families from Britain, Germany, Japan and America. None of them knew it was an experimental show or that they were being monitored and secretly filmed. They got them to stay in a hotel and they thought they were on like a country vs. country game show or something.
They conducted experiments like when the family came downstairs, there would be their national flag burning on the ground outside. The Japanese were like really reserved and non-confrontational, but the Americans were like in hysterics and crying that someone would "burn the beautiful flag of the greatest country in the world" and so on... it just really showed how the different nations differ.
**************************
My cousins moved to the US about 5 years ago and they've really changed so much. They're so over the top about everything and have to be all super-friendly and kind of sickly and it's just really annoying sometimes. One of them stayed here because he was going to university and he hasn't changed at all, it's really odd.
That's the report I've had from most people who've been to America is that it gets a bit too much after a while because everything is so over the top and manufactured.
That's not meant to cause offense to anyone, of course. I've never been to the US yet but I hope to one day because I think it would be a great experience. I'm not judging anyone, I'm just sort of generalising my opinion for the sake of debate. I'd like to know what you guys think :)

Being American and loveing what my country stands for (not what it has become) i do have to agree with you Mig. Many ppl are over the top about things that really dont matter that much. I see how Americans act, and to a degree i would say i act that way at times too. I dont think America is the greatest conutry on Earth as all the other countrys have their ouw cultrue to offer to the world, but this is the one place where pretty much everyone is wellcome to pratice their beleifs.
I think to many Americans try to push our feelings off on ppl that dont want them, and that is wrong as we tend to get pretty pissy when someone does the same to us. We expect everyone to love our flag as much as we do because we fail to understand why anyone else would want to live other than we do. We have such huge amounts of freedom here that it goes to ppls head. Saddly, such as in your example of the TV show, these were some of those ppl. This gives some of us such a bad name. Most of the ppl i know are the hardest working SOB's you will ever meet.
With the flag burnning issue you must understand a lil about American history. You see when we were in Vietman many of our men and women were fighting their asses off day after day in country, and here at home there are ppl buring Old Glory in protest of the war. This was a case of misguidence in the gen pop of the US at the time, as it was not to be directed at the service men, but at the politics that got those service men there. The sad reality is haterid begts haterid and this carried over to these fine men and women that severed their country in blood. This is why the burning of the American flag is such a sore point to most Americans. The over reaction is a guilty feeling of how we treated our own miltary personal after a bitter fight in the Nam.

What about the US and its wealth. By far the wealthiest nation in the world. I forget the actual stats but i think it was the USA has only 35-40% of the world population and 75% of the world income. But look that up those stats might and are prob wrong.
Also I would have to say the US has some of the more creative minds of the modern world.
What about us playing world police? You all know the world is a better place with out Saddam in power. I think this also covers backing up what our big mouths say.
Just saw this thread for the first time. I'm a Dane and I live in Sweden, so I guess women is on my list of what my country does best.
Other things we are best at: Equality between sexes, rooting out discriminatory behaviour, building chopper's, making rod's (take a look at any really good rod building company in the states and there is at least one swede working there), health care and making safe, yet fun cars.
we are pretty good at drinking too much, and we know the Finns hate's us. We just dont care...
Øllebrød, Mig, is of Danish origin and it is actually rather nice, although really strange.
As to the US being a world police, yes, in many ways it is acting as such, but it is unfortunately now reaping the seeds of former administrations politics. The old Enemy of my enemy-politics have swung back and is not so nice any more.
The 9/11 and terrorist problems in large are a result of US foreign politics, bot open and covert, during many years.
The US I have met is hospitable, friendly and trustworthy. Unfortunately it is not the average American that sits on Capitol Hill.
Too many lobbyists and a civil law system that totally missed it's point, but I'm sure that eventually it will be reformed.

Apparently, from reading all of these posts, NONE of these countries have an exclusive hold on ARROGANCE. or IGNORANCE.
Here's something this American is best at: not givin' a dang about what people from other countries think about America, especially people that have never even been here. Do YOU care what I think about YOUR country from what I see on tv and read about in newspapers, magazines and the internet? I thought not. I HOPE not. :icon_eek:
Øllebrød, Mig, is of Danish origin and it is actually rather nice, although really strange.
Cool. Yeah, it's really nice :essen:
My mum's family is Danish/German (German technically, by blood, but lived in a Danish community near the border) so I grew up with most of that stuff. I'd say some cool stuff to you in Danish but I stopped speaking it when I was younger and have forgotten most of it. Smør? lol. I still call my mum 'Ma' to this day, because I couldn't say 'Mor' when I was learning to speak. My Grandma is still Mor Mor though.
we know the Finns hate's us. We just dont care...
I have always been under the impression that Finns aren't quite the same as the other Scandinavians. Maybe something to do with them being further away and bordered with Russia, closer to Estonia, etc.
Apparently, from reading all of these posts, NONE of these countries have an exclusive hold on ARROGANCE. or IGNORANCE.

I think the main reason why Finland is not really like the other Scandinavian contries is the language. Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland all have the same roots for the language, Germanic. Finland is completely different.
The only country in the world that share the roots of language with Finland is Hungary. It is called Finnish-Ugrisk and it is very hard to understand But it is pronounced exactly as it is spelled, so to say something is not that hard.
I think that being a. from a different base of language and origin and B. having been under foreign government for century's are why the Finns are different from the rest of the Nordic people. They are more quiet than the rest of us but they are also though and when they have to do something they bite down and carry on till it is finished. Sisu.
GEaD, Arrogance and stupidity are unfortunately universal among us humans.
The good thing is that those of us that have met people from different parts of the world realizes that people are generally much nicer than their reputation.
And mostly good to others. I have been treated with hospitality in every single country I have ever visited in the world.
When it comes to US I think it is because the US is given a lot of bad press. I have to say that I have only met one or two Americans I did not like. And I have for sure met a lot more europeans I did not care for.
