There are a few things you should do before you dive into the big pool. If you have experience, that's good but a lots of experience is needed of course. Assuming you have minimal experience I'd suggest you start off with smaller forums, like invisionfree.com does offer free forums.
As for a big site you'll need big funding as well. COD Boards and the network consumes about 200GB a month. That doesn't come cheap. Not to mention for bigger sites you need dedicated servers which are even more expensive and you have to have extensive knowledge in linux to maintain your server. You can get your host to maintain the server but the costs of maintaining is even higher.

indeed. it's definitely not something to jump into lightly. running forums requires technical knowledge, money, and an incredible amount of time and effort if you want things done right.

Well of course for a big site you'd be spending big cash. I can say about $200 bucks a month spent on a server with maintainance and everything should be able to run a pretty large site.

To get a sponsor you'd have to be big. No one will sponsor without any proof that you can actually make it big. So you'll need to make it, feed it, grow it and then look for sponsors. I've tried it, it doesn't work on smaller scale.

having a team helps. My team here helps me on various things on the server and the network. Don't remember when I started but I think I once had free host from hypermart.net and a free .com domain from namezero.com i think. That all goes way back in time.

You should also look around for cheap dedicated servers, my recomendation is
http://ev1servers.net (http://www.codboards.com/redirect.php?http://ev1servers.net)
currently i have a 700gb bandwith a month server for $99 a month which is £50 for me.
also their network is very good (13gb/s) and they have live support 24/7
many of their servers are sold out atm, as they are making a new datacenter, opening in around 1 month, which will be able to host about 30k servers :)
